Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The group of women also featured experts in various fields.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
